Can the students be pulling the triggering mechanism back and then release, or does it have to be latched down to something that they trigger?

The students can not hold it down and release it.  The device must be ready to fire without being touched in any way by the student other than to trigger it.

**Remember that team devices may not extend outside the cubic meter, before or after the shot AND one edge of the cubic meter is the starting line!  In other words, make sure team devices don’t have a piece extend across the starting line after it’s been fired (since it’d be beyond the cubic meter edge of the starting line)

One edge of the “cube” must be on the starting line when the device is in the ready position.  No part of the device may extend outside of the dimensions of the cubic meter before or after a shot.

A few reminders

**Remember that judges will determine if teams balls are acceptable or not!  Racquet balls or tennis balls are fine, but make sure your teams aren’t using what’s considered a ‘plastic’ ball by judges (even if it’s pliable) and doesn’t meet the description from the packet below….

Each team will bring a launching device and a hollow spherical rubber ball that is a minimum of 3 centimeters in diameter (a racquet ball or tennis ball is the recommended type to use). Judges will determine if the ball the team brings is acceptable (so if you have a question about your team ball, check with your Coach!).

Are ping pong balls an acceptable type of projectile? They do measure over 3cm.

No ping pong balls would not be allowed, remember you need to use a hollow spherical rubber ball.
